Eric Clapton: Jack Bruce 'A Tremendous Inspiration to Me'

Following the news of Cream bassist Jack Bruce's death at the age of 71, countless tributes have poured in for the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, including remembrances from his former band mates like Eric Clapton. "He was a great musician and composer, and a tremendous inspiration to me," Clapton wrote on his Facebook page. The guitarist's official website also shared a long history of Bruce's career in music.

Ginger Baker's official fan club also delivered a quote from the Cream drummer, "I am very sad to learn of the loss of a fine man, Jack Bruce... My thoughts & wishes are with his family at this difficult time." Bruce also occasionally served as a member of Ringo Starr's All-Starr Band, and the Beatles drummer shared his condolences. "We lost Jack Bruce today an incredible musician writer and a good friend peace and love to all his family," Starr tweeted.

Long considered one of rock's greatest bassists, Bruce's playing style was incredibly influential – Pink Floyd's Roger Waters called Bruce "probably the most musically gifted bass player who's ever been" in his 100 Greatest Artists tribute to Cream – and many renowned bassists have paid their respect to Bruce on Twitter.

"So sad to hear of Jack Bruce passing. My biggest influence and favourite bass player. Thank you, Jack. RIP," Black Sabbath's Geezer Butler wrote, while Red Hot Chili Peppers' Flea added, "Oh man. Jack Bruce. Too much. Wow. Holy holy. I love that guy. One of a kind greatness. End of an era."
