Like another commentator, I've never been wild about this song although I can see the point of it. I used to play (during a period of low rock activity) with a pop/folk act who had it on the repertoire and I hated having to play it because I would have to sit through chorus after brainless chorus with happy-clappy audiences who just loved it. The end came for me when the singer's tuneless girlfriend, who he insisted had to sing backing vocals, persuaded him to bring Mary Hopkins' Those Were the Days into the set. American Pie and Those Were the Days, back to back - can you imagine it? Thank god the singer moved to France where he is doublessly much more deserved.
