Hear Josh Turner's Leisurely 'Lay Low' — Exclusive Song Premiere

Josh Turner performs in Nashville

Jennifer and Josh Turner welcomed their fourth son last week, so it's safe to say they aren't "laying low" very often. But a guy can dream.

When Turner first heard "Lay Low," written by Ross Copperman, Tony Martin and Mark Nesler, he immediately thought of his cabin in South Carolina, where he can, as the song relates, leave the stresses of the world behind and just relax with his wife.

"[The song] painted a mental picture of our cabin and how secluded it is. It's where we go to get away from it all and reconnect with each other, to be reminded of what's most important," the country star. "Laying low is something Jennifer and I love to do. We most always have to make the time to do it, because as you can imagine, we don't just have ample amounts of idle time."

"Lay Low" is the first single from Turner's forthcoming album, the followup to 2012's Punching Bag, which yielded the Number One country song of that year in sales, streaming and radio airplay, "Time Is Love." (Not-so-coincidentally, that song was also written by Martin and Nesler, along with Tom Shapiro.) The singer's new project has a similar, true-to-tradition sound, and certainly doesn't cave to the pop-driven, booze-fueled climate of today's country radio. But he still manages to mix it up.

"The basic standards I've always held for my music still apply to this record, but I've definitely taken a step back and looked at what today's environment is and how my music can fit into that," he reports. "I don't follow trends and I've always followed my heart, whether my music fits in or not, but I want to be a player in the game and continue to evolve as an artist. This record, so far, has great musicianship, great melodies and lyrics that today's audience can relate to."

Turner has a two-night stint in Switzerland this weekend. He'll resume touring stateside in October, testing out at least a pair of new songs from the new album on his audiences.

"The new songs I've played live so far are 'Lay Low' and 'Bench Seat,'" he says. "They've gotten a great reaction from the crowds, and I look forward to playing more new stuff in the near future."
